Confessions of a skirt man

For the last two years, I've been waiting anxiously for the man skirt to arrive. Making it's debut on the hips and talents of world-renowned Marc Jacobs, in 2007 . His bold attempt, to add to today's metro-sexual man's closet. He walks the catwalk sporting a tailored black pleaded knee length skirt, paired with distressed black leather boots, a plain white henley t-shirt and a black blazer. Besides the skirt: the plain white t-shirt, black boots and blazer; is the norm and typical look for men.

Making the revised look come alive in modern masculinity, and keeping the man's persona known as masculine.

Yes, we've seen men in skirts, kilts that is. But this isn't a kilt, this is a new ensembel for our generation male. A look that can be percieved as feminine. It's a confident and high-fashion look, for the likes of any man that taps into the metro-sexual world.

May I remind you, eight years ago every man despised Capri pants, and man scaping. Fast forward to today, and I bet you every man has a pair of Capri pants, or shorts that are similar to the resemblance of the capri, and has his favorite beautician on speed-dial. This will take time to evolve, just like any other new trend.

The first retailer to introduce the man skirt, H&M. H&M advertised(see picture above)the man skirt on a full page spread in a local DC literary publication. H&M, one of the largest leading retailers for young and hip-trend setter's, is paving the way for this tres chic influence.

I've recently met a man, who is now my boyfriend. When he learned my obsession with this new trend, he could only respond with "oh my god, NO" and a look of deprived masculinity. I would forward him pictures of Marc Jacobs wearing the skirt, and all the different concepts Marc pairs it with. It's not any different from what men wear on a daily basis, just a new way. Getting away from the daily boring look of jeans and khakis. We can thank Marc Jacobs for creating a new look for the fashion inclined man.

A few weeks later, I was able to special order the skirt from the fashion house of Marc Jacobs. I'm thinking of the many ways I will dress this iconic concept. Till then, I will continue to invest in my closet and fashion sense. After all, I am a man that taps into the metro-sexual world.

  1. Great post, a pleasant change from the three sentence commentary i've grown accustomed too in the majority of blogs.
